NEW ALBUM - UNDER A MEDITERRANEAN SKY

Steve releases his new acoustic album Under A Mediterranean Sky on 22nd January 2021 as a limited CD Digipak, gatefold 2LP/CD/booklet and digital album via InsideOut Music. Under A Mediterranean Sky is Steve’s first acoustic solo album since Tribute in 2008 and takes inspiration from his extensive travels around the Mediterranean with his wife Jo.
Working closely with long-time musical partner Roger King, Steve has used his time during 2020’s lockdown to take us on an extraordinary musical journey around the Mediterranean, painting vivid images of stunning landscapes and celebrating the diverse cultures of the region. Steve demonstrates the exquisite beauty of the nylon guitar at times venturing into the exotic ethnic and often supported by dazzling orchestral arrangements.

“A lot of acoustic ideas had been forming over the years, and it felt like the perfect time to create this album,” notes Steve, “a time to contemplate the places we’ve visited around the Mediterranean with the kind of music which evolved from the world of imagination. Because we can’t really travel, substantially at the moment, I hope that the album will take people on that journey. Whether you sit down and listen to it or drift off to it with a glass of wine…”
Signed copies Under A Mediterranean Sky (including an exclusive Mediterranean Blue vinyl edition) will be available to pre-order from store.hackettsongs.com from 20th November.

Icelandic post-rockers Sigur Rós have streamed their brand new single Stendur æva. The song is taken from the band's long-awaited new album release, Odin’s Raven Magic, an orchestral work featuring the Schola Cantorum of Reykjavik and L’Orchestre des Laureats du Conservatoire national de Paris. The work, which draws from the band’s deep roots in both orchestral and choral traditions, will be released on Krunk, via Warner Classics, on December 4.

Odin’s Raven Magic draws from the band’s roots in orchestral and choral traditions, and is a collaboration between the band, Maria Huld Markan Sigfúsdóttir, Icelandic music legend Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson, and Steindór Andersen, one of Iceland’s most respected chanters of traditional epic narrative.

Stendur æva features vocals from both Jónsi and Steindór Andersen. Classical with a modern edge, dramatic, beautiful and meditative, the song was recorded with a full choir and symphony orchestra.

The orchestral and choral arrangements were largely handled by former Sigur Rós member and arranger Kjartan Sveinsson, and Maria Huld Markan Sigfúsdóttir from the band amiina, and the piece prominently features the unique sound of a five-octave marimba built from roughly-hewn pieces of stone by sculptor and artist Páll Guðmundsson.

Enormous 50th anniversary box sets for each album

Cat Stevens Mona Bone Jakon and Tea for the Tillerman albums will both be reissued as extensive super deluxe edition box sets in December.

Both records were issued in 1970, as Cat Stevens started the second phase of his career. He was  shedding his pop star image from his days signed to Deram, and songs like ‘Mathew and Son’, and turning into a more serious folk-rock performer.

Newly signed to Island Records, Stevens’ Mona Bone Jakon album (released in April 1970) wasn’t a really a hit at all, but it did deliver a top ten UK single in ‘Lady D’Arbanville’ and its standing grew when Tea for the Tillerman was a major success – driven by the single ‘Wild World’ – when released only seven months later, in November of that same year.

So both albums are 50 years old and therefore, slightly unusually, we are getting two big box sets at the same time. Mona Bone Jakon offers 24 previously unreleased tracks – including an entire CD of unheard studio demos – and Tea for the Tillerman will feature a further 21 unreleased tracks alongside a host of other rarities.

Both box sets feature newly remastered versions of each album (overseen by original producer, Paul Samwell-Smith) and new 2020 mixes by David Hefti. The latter is on CD and vinyl within the box sets. The Tea for the Tillerman box set also throws in the recently released Tea For the Tillerman 2 so you actually get three versions of the record in that box.

Both super deluxe editions include demos CD, and unlike Tea for the Tillerman, Mona Bone Jakon has never been given expanded reissue treatment before, so these are all previously unreleased.

Each set also has very generous live CDs full of live performances either on stage at concerts or festivals, or for TV appearances.

A blu-ray in both sets provides a hi-res stereo of the new mix of each album, plus various videos of live and/or TV appearances and both box sets come with vinyl versions of the new 2020 mixes and 12-inch EPs with further content.

Both box sets include selections of memorabilia. For Mona Bone Jakon that means  an Island Records press kit, two Island press photos, a replica 1970 Plumpton Jazz and Blues flyer, a Cat Stevens tour sticker and ‘dustbin’ greetings card and pop art print in a card envelope. Tea for the Tillerman offers a ‘Pick Up A Good Book’ bookmark, a Yusuf / Cat Stevens designed ‘Miles From Nowhere’ print, a reproduction handwritten lyric sheet for ‘Miles From Nowhere’, a fold-out ‘Live From The Troubadour 1970’ poster, and a Tea For The Tillerman sticker

Both albums are also being issued as 2CD deluxe sets (with ‘highlights’ bonus CDs with demos and live material) and on vinyl LP and single CD editions. Note that the 2020 remix is exclusive to each box set on both CD and vinyl. The individual releases offer only the remastered versions.

All four versions of each album, including the two big box sets, will be released on 4 December 2020 via UMC/Island.

Focus / 50 Years: Anthology 1970-1976

9CD+2DVD box set

50 Years: Anthology 1970-1976 is a forthcoming box set that contains the complete work of Dutch rock group Focus between 1970 and 1976.

The band – guitarist Jan Akkerman, keyboard player Thijs van Leer, bass player Bert Ruiter and drummer Pierre van der Linden – enjoyed global success during their first six years, touring extensively in the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia and Japan.

Focus scored two unlikely worldwide hit singles with ‘Hocus Pocus’ and ‘Sylvia’ and sold several million albums during this period (such as ‘Moving Waves’, ‘Focus 3’ and ‘Hamburger Concerto’).

50 Years: Anthology 1970-1976 is curated by Focus/Jan Akkerman archivist Wouter Bessels (he previously curated the 26CD Akkerman box and recently worked on the forthcoming Tangerine Dream box set), and features newly remastered versions of the first five studio albums all of which come with rare bonus tracks (single versions, alternates, rough mixes). Additionally, it includes 1973 live album At The Rainbow, the Ship of Memories compilation from 1976 (which features 11 bonus tracks), the complete BBC In Concert 1973 gig taken from the original stereo master tapes and a disc of unreleased live performances.

Two DVDs (PAL, region-free) contain over four hours of audiovisual material taken from the archives of various TV stations around the world and include the first official release of the 1973 ‘Focus At The Rainbow’ concert movie, carefully restored from the original 16 mm film.

The box set comes with an 80-page booklet with band history, liner notes and various memorabilia.

50 Years: Anthology 1970-1976 is released by Red Bullet Productions on 13 November 2020.

Esoteric Recordings is proud to announce the release of a new re-mastered four-disc deluxe 45th anniversary boxed set limited edition (comprising 3 CDs and a DVD) of YEAR OF THE CAT the legendary 1976 album by AL STEWART.

Recorded in the early months of 1976 at Abbey Road studios (with some sessions and mixing taking place at Davlen Studios in Los Angeles), YEAR OF THE CAT was the seventh album by Stewart and was the second album on which he collaborated with the celebrated producer ALAN PARSONS.

The record was an album of immense musical inventiveness and creativity and was a triumph both in terms of Al Stewart’s song writing and the stunning and sophisticated production by Alan Parsons. Featuring such classic songs as ‘On the Border’, ‘Lord Grenville’, ‘Midas Shadow’, ‘If it Doesn’t Come Naturally, Leave It’, ‘One Stage Before’ and the classic title track. YEAR OF THE CAT was a major commercial and critical success on its release, reaching the US Billboard Top Five and was a European hit, eventually earning platinum disc status in the USA by March 1977. The single ‘Year of the Cat’ was also a Top Ten hit in the States and was a Top 40 hit single in the UK, establishing Al Stewart as a major artist.

This 45th Anniversary edition of this special album has been newly re-mastered for the very first time from the original first-generation master tapes by ALAN PARSONS and also features his stunning new 5.1 Surround sound mix from the original multi-track tapes. In addition, the set includes a complete, previously unreleased concert recorded at the Paramount Theater, Seattle in October 1976 on the YEAR OF THE CAT tour over two CDs and a new mix of the track ‘Belsize Blues’, recorded at Abbey Road Studios in September 1975.

This limited edition boxed set also features an illustrated 68-page book with a new essay featuring an interview with Al Stewart and a facsimile promotional poster and a set of four postcards and is a fitting tribute to a much treasured and legendary masterpiece by a consummate song writer and performer.

4CD and 5LP super deluxe editions with outtakes & live material

Black Sabbath‘s 1972 album Vol 4 will be reissued early next year as expansive CD and vinyl super deluxe edition box sets.

The band’s fourth album (obviously…) features tracks like ‘Supernaut’, ‘Changes’, and ‘Snowblind’ and has been newly remastered for this reissue.

However, there’s some exciting bonus material available in both the 4CD and 5LP super deluxe editions (both formats feature exactly the same audio).

First off, there’s six previously unreleased studio outtakes on the second disc of both sets. These have been newly mixed by remixmeister Steven Wilson using the analog multi-tracks.

Additionally, the Vol 4 box sets feature 11 additional studio recordings that spotlight alternative takes, false starts and snippets of studio dialogue. Again, these have been remixed by Steven Wilson and include several alternative takes for ‘Wheels Of Confusion’ as well as outtakes for ‘The Straightener’ and ‘Snowblind’. These are contained within CD 3 of the CD box and are spread across LPs two and three in the vinyl set.

vol4_vinylbox600-1.jpg

Finally, the last CD (or LPs four and five) brings together live recordings of the era, recreating a typical setlist from Black Sabbath’s tour for Vol 4. Recorded in March 1973 at various stops along the band’s U.K. tour, these recordings were originally slated for a live album that was ultimately shelved and this represents the first time a full 1973 Sabbath show has been recreated. The live audio has been newly mixed by Richard Digby Smith using the original 16-track analog tapes.

Both versions of the Vol 4 box sets come with extensive booklets featuring liner notes, rare photos, and a poster with previously unpublished early artwork of the album using the working title Snowblind.

These Vol 4 box sets will be released on 12 February 2021.

John Lennon / Plastic Ono Band box set reissue deluxe edition

6CD+2blu-ray deluxe • Remixed for stereo and surround sound • 159 mixes and over 11 hours of audio • Dolby Atmos included

John Lennon‘s 1970 album John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band will be reissued as a 6CD+2blu-ray box set in April and will feature over 11 hours of audio newly remixed for stereo, 5.1 surround and Dolby Atmos.

Lennon’s first ‘proper’ solo album was issued in December 1970 and is a raw, stripped-back delve into the psyche of the ex-Beatle. The lyrics of songs like ‘Isolation’, ‘Mother’, ‘Working Class Hero’ and ‘Hold On’ are Lennon exploring (and exposing) his personal issues, including the pain of losing his mother, twice – once when she abandoned him, leaving him in the care of his Aunt ‘Mimi’ Smith, and then when she was killed in a road traffic accident (in 1958).

John undertook Arthur Janov’s ‘Primal Therapy’ earlier in 1970 as a way to deal with this repressed pain and clearly the issues – and in the case of ‘Mother’, the actual therapy itself – carried over into the album.

The album was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in September and October of 1970 and was co-produced by Lennon, Yoko Ono and Phil Spector. The core band was just John, Ringo Starr and Klaus Voorman (on bass), although Yoko is credited with ‘Wind’ and Billy Preston and Phil Spector both played piano on a track each (‘God’ and ‘Love’, respectively).

As with the Imagine reissue of 2018 and last year’s Gimme Some Truth ‘best of’, the audio for this reissue of Plastic Ono Band has been completely remixed from the original multi-track tapes, lead by engineer Paul Hicks.

Mixes are broken into different categories. Ultimate Mixes are the most faithful to the originals but are generally “sonically clearer” and also focus on increasing the clarify of John’s vocals. Outtakes are presented in the style of a ‘rough listening mix’ and Elements mixes are designed to bring out aspects previously buried in a mix. Evolution Documentary mixes are an ‘audio montage’ that takes you through the development of each song from demo to master recording via “instructions, rehearsals, recordings, multitrack exploration and studio chatter”. As if that wasn’t enough there’s demos – both home and studio – plus jams, some of which take in old rock ‘n’ roll numbers once covered by The Beatles (‘Honey Don’t’, ‘Matchbox’) and even a couple of Fab songs themselves in ‘Get Back’ and ‘I’ve Got A Feeling’. On blu-ray there are some lengthy Yoko live sessions.

The album is presented in 5.1 surround sound on one of the blu-rays but Plastic Ono Band goes a step further than Imagine and offers the audio in Dolby Atmos. Hi-res  192/24 stereo is also available.

Amazingly, their are 159 new mixes of this 11-track album, across the two blu-rays, although that includes versions of non-album tracks ‘Give Peace A Chance’, ‘Instant Karma’ and ‘Cold Turkey’. This adds up to more than 11 hours of audio. The six CDs cover 102 mixes (which are also on the blu-ray discs) and offers more than six hours of audio.

This new eight-disc deluxe edition of Plastic Ono Band comes with a 132-page hardcover book with detailed notes and photos. It will almost certainly be the same dimensions as both the Imagine and Gimme Some Truth deluxe editions and comes with a ‘War Is Over!’ poster and two post cards. The normally faded cover art looks to have been adjusted for more hue and contrast.

There will also be a half-speed mastered 2LP vinyl set of Plastic Ono Band, a two-CD set and a single CD edition.

The John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band deluxe set and associated physical formats will be released on 16 April 2021.

A new product listing has appeared on Amazon for a separate release of the Knebworth 1990 concert found in the Pink Floyd The Later Years 1987-2014 box set.

So far there are only listings for a 1CD and 1LP releases, but keep an eye on AFG for any updates. The concert was remastered as part of the new box set, with amazing new sonics and vastly improved visuals.

The Knebworth 1990 concert was held to celebrate and feature the winners of the 1990 Silver Clef Awards, with donations benefiting the Nordoff–Robbins music therapy charity. The event attracted a crowd of 120,000 and saw the likes of Cliff Richard & The Shadows, Tears for Fears, Eric Clapton, Dire Straits, Elton John, Paul McCartney, Ray Cooper, Robert Plant & Jimmy Page, Status Quo, Phil Collins & Genesis take to the stage.

Pink Floyd rounded out the evening with an hour long performance featuring Clare Torry reprising her vocals on The Great Gig in the Sky, and Candy Dulfer playing saxophone on Shine On You Crazy Diamond.

Black Sabbath / Sabotage super deluxe edition box sets

Remastered album, full 1975 live show & more

sabotage_cover_600.jpg

The 1975 Black Sabbath album, Sabotage, will be reissued as vinyl and CD super deluxe edition box sets, in June. The band’s sixth studio album was recorded amidst legal wranglings with their former manager – which is how the title came about.

The both box sets feature a newly remastered version of the album paired with a complete live show recorded during the 1975 tour. 13 of the 16 live tracks included are previously unreleased.

The four-CD box set features the studio album and live concert across three CDs with a fourth disc effectively a CD single. It features the single edit for ‘Am I Going Insane (Radio)’ and ‘Hole In The Sky’.

The vinyl box set features the same content across four vinyl records and those two extra tracks feature on a bonus seven-inch single, with artwork replicating the rare Japanese version of the single.

All this music is accompanied by sleeve notes in a 60-page book (CD version – the vinyl is a 40-pager) that tell the story of the album through quotes from band members and the music media along with rare photos and press clippings from the era.

Also included in both packages is a 1975 Madison Square Garden replica concert book and Sabotage 1975 tour poster.

Sabotage is released on 11 June 2021, via BMG.

Motörhead‘s 1981 album No Sleep ‘Til Hammersmith is to be reissued for its 40th anniversary across a number of formats, including a four-CD deluxe edition with previously unreleased performances.

The record featured tracks from the band’s ‘Short Sharp Pain in the Neck’ tour which saw them play Newcastle, Leeds, Norfolk and Belfast in the space of a week, in late March 1981.

The 11-track album – issued in June of the same year – featured three tracks from Ace Of Spades, five from Overkill, the title track from Bomber title track and two from their debut. It was the only Motorhead number one album and Lemmy is quoted as saying: “I knew it’d be the live one that went best, because we’re really a live band. You can’t listen to a record and find out what we’re about. You’ve got to see us.”

Just over half of the original album is from the Newcastle show on the 30 March, in case you are wondering. The box set is pictured above and includes 28-page book, poster, plectrum, tour pass, ticket, flyer & badge.
