Primero que nada quisiera presentarnos, somos GRAVA, una banda de rock progresivo de La Serena, este 2018 lanzamos nuestro primer LP llamado "Edenea"

The sound of 70’s prog all but died out when the decade ended. Genesis were slowly moulded from an influential, artistic project into a sell-out pop group, Yes moved from releasing 3-track masterpieces to 80’s, radio friendly albums, while King Crimson faded into obscurity as their improv heavy, Avant Garde experiments lost their appeal. Progressive metal eventually came around to replace it. Hit and miss to say the least, the subgenre has provided some exceptional bands like Opeth and Porcupine Tree, but has slowly degraded to the point where a 16 string bass and an indecipherable time signature have come to define prog.

By this point, fans of classic prog are desperately clinging to our collection of 70’s albums that we know inside out, and a Steven Wilson remix is the closest thing we can come to a new release. It’s even harder for those of us cursed to have been born A.P. (After Prog), and never even got to anticipate a new release. That’s where Wobbler come in.

Formed in Norway in 1999, Wobbler released their debut ‘Hinterlands’ in 2005. It took influence from virtually every 70’s band imaginable, with Jon Anderson sounding vocals, Tony Banks style organ and sudden, King Crimson-like, pseudo-metal riffs permeating their complex arrangements. Remaining pretty much unknown for the release of ‘Afterglow’ and ‘Rites At Dawn’, it was last year’s release of ‘From Silence To Somewhere’ that brought Wobbler to the attention of 70’s proggers craving new tunes.

The 20 minute, epic opening title track is a journey of creative genius, with themes introduced subtly and calmly towards the beginning, returning with grandeur as the piece draws to a close. It’s thought out in the same way as masterworks like ‘Close To The Edge’, rather than presented as an amalgamation of ideas linked together without any real connection, bringing it closer to a classical symphony than a song. The short interludes that are often slotted into prog albums are almost always the weakest, most forgettable part of the album. To be honest, the same is true here, but it doesn’t stop ‘Rendered In Shades Of Green’ acting as a brilliant, orchestrated calming period after the exhausting journey of the previous track.

‘Fermented Hours’ alludes to so many of the bands influences that if it wasn’t handled in such an exceptional way then it might be laughable. Twice in a row, the intro convinced me that Yes’ ‘Sound Chaser’ was about to start playing, while later in the piece ELP’s ‘Tarkus’ and Genesis’ ‘Cinema Show’ are both imitated with style. The band’s exclusive use of pre-1975 analogue instruments is really picked up here. The album is rounded off with the almost medieval sounding ‘Foxlight’, which is filled with woodwind and folky vocals and provides one of the highlights of the album in its 3 minute outro.

Every element of the album is a perfect glimpse back into the past. Bands have tried it, but I’ve never heard such an authentic sound, with such creativity, and technical brilliance. It’s no surprise it’s listed as Prog Archives no.1 album of the 21^st century.
It really is the first perfect album I’ve seen released since the 70’s.

Absolute Elswhere es una banda que en realidad es un solo tipo, Paul Fishman, que acompañado del gran batero Bill Bruford (yes, crimson, genesis), grabó este disco muy conceptual y ambiental, con mucho teclado, en donde podemos encontrar influencias marcadas de cosas como Crimson, el Camel de Snow Goose, Tubullar Bells, Pink Floyd, harto Nektar y hasta Alan Parsons. En las canciones en que toca Bruford se nota su maestría. Un buen disco para escuchar y dejarse llevar por diferentes atmósferas. Se huelen ciertas hiervas y àcidos al escuchar el disco!!

A ratos se nota que es un soundtrack, aunque de una serie de libros y no de una película (supuestamente acerca de alienígenas, que menos)

Acabo de terminar de escuchar el disco en Tidal. Muy buena recomendación, se agradece. Mis impresiones mientras escucho el anterior de la banda:

Al escucharlo pensé en una frase que me gusta mucho de Octavio Paz, que dice que el gusto es un agente de la reminiscencia. Es decir que nos gustan aquellas cosas que, de alguna manera, nos transportan a experiencias buenas del pasado. Eso es bueno pero a la vez está el riesgo de que nos congele y detenga a donde mismo y no avancemos a cosas nuevas.

El disco es muy bueno. Los músicos son excelentes. Los cambios de ritmos son geniales. No se si el sonido me mató, encontré que la mezcla marcaba demasiado los bajos, pero puede ser Tidal (desde el Ipad por cable al Dac). Ya veremos al escuchar el cd (ya está claro que vale la pena encargarlo!!)

Al analizar el disco encontré muchas referencias, incluso homenajes, a monstruos como Jethro Tull, Yes, sin duda Genesis, algo de los últimos discos de Opeth. Al princicpio de la primera canción una de las guitarras recordaba a Latimer de Camel o a Sinclair de Caravan. Algunas secciones muy ELP.

La voz es distinta a la de Jon Anderson, pero da la impresión de que el tipo trata de cantar como él a veces. Suena similar, con un tono parecido pero empieza en un tono mucho mas bajo que Anderson. Hay un par de momentos en que es tan similar a Genesis que sientes que Peter Gabriel va a empezar a cantar.

A diferencia de Yes, el bajo es mas rítmico que melódico. No es como el de Squire que tiene una melodía aparte que destaca (Squire era un maestro)

La parte final del ùltimo track incluso recuerda a los jaivas (por increíble que parezca)

En resumen un excelente grupo, con un sonido muy atractivo. Un aporte, sin duda, a la escena progresiva actual. Sólo creo que debieran reforzar su voz y estilo propios, para no correr el riesgo de parecer una banda tributo a los gigantes del prog setentero.

Pd. Estoy escuchando el Rites at Down de la misma banda y es muy bueno también.

Que buena y genial un libro así. Por ahí por el año 97 un pariente me trajo una caja especial con 4 discos de lo mejor hasta la década del 80 de USA. Yesyears creo que se llamaba. Venía también con un libro. Aún los tengo. Antes tenía un disco de lo mejor de Yes, pero con esa caja descubrí lo increíbles que son y se transformaron en una de mis dos bandas favoritas, junto a Marillion. Ahora tengo todos sus discos en estudio y hasta un par de poleras.

Es que los Yes son muy rebuenos.  También son de mis bandas favoritas junto a Rush, Tool,  Marillion, Genesis (con y sin Gabriel), Gentle Giant y últimamente Supertramp.

Un disco de culto, que puede perfectamente caer dentro del jazz fusión y ser uno de sus mejores exponentes

Es que los Yes son muy rebuenos.  También son de mis bandas favoritas junto a Rush, Tool,  Marillion, Genesis (con y sin Gabriel), Gentle Giant y últimamente Supertramp. 

Al igual que @jsc010 tampoco me gusta toda la discografia.  yo llego hasta el Tormato.

En prog yo tengo un centro, que escucho permanentemente (marillion, yes, genesis, gentle giant, wilson-porcupine), pero cada cierto rato voy apuntando a distintos lados de manera adicional. A veces me da por el canterbury, a ratos por el metal prog (incluyendo Ayreon, haken, dream theater), después prog italiano, lo mas prog de sui generis, elp, prog mas moderno como transatlantic o morse, etc

Hay tanto para disfrutar!!

Disco estrenado hoy. Muy bueno. Hartos riffs, cambios de ritmos y el sonido característico de esta gran banda.
