In this course, Monteverdi's L'Orfeo and the Birth of Opera, we go back to Mantua, Italy, in 1607, where composer Claudio Monteverdi's "fable in music" pioneered many of the characteristics of modern opera. This module introduces students to the musical styles and characters of "Orfeo," and gives a behind the scenes look at the work it took to invent a new genre that would change music forever. The module's grand finale is a live performance, in English, of the opera's pivotal Act II.
These courses from HarvardX introduce students to classical music through an in-depth study of five musical masterpieces. Each course introduces you to a new piece from a different time period. You’ll learn about the musical details of the piece, along with the circumstances of its composition, premiere performance, and its legacy and significance today.
These courses can be taken in any order, and the remaining courses will be released over the next few weeks. In Handel’s Messiah and Baroque Oratorio, you meet composer George Frederic Handel and librettist Charles Jennens, and learn about the varied musical styles used in his famous oratorio, Messiah. Next, please explore Ludwig van Beethoven's magnum opus, the Ninth Symphony, which serves as a gateway to the rest of the Classical and Romantic symphonic repertoire. Then continue to Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique and Program Music in the 19th Century and finally, we will open Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring: Modernism, Ballet, and Riots.
The course is self-paced, so feel free to jump right in, and be sure to introduce yourself on the class discussion board.
